BATMAN Guardian of Gotham

Batman Guardian of Gotham - a First Person Shooter for mobile

For all the fuss surrounding the excellent Dark Knight movie, there were almost no game adaptations.
Perhaps it’s because film-to-game conversions almost always totally suck, or perhaps it was because cockney tantrum-thrower Christian Bale was so rubbish as the Caped Crusader that putting the real star of the film (The Joker) as the main character of a game wasn’t appealing for the marketing guys, it’s hard to say.
But one of the few formats to actually enjoy a Dark Knight game was mobile.
Now the Bat is back on that same platform from the same developer, in Batman: Guardian of Gotham.
Thankfully, Glu hasn’t just recycled a previous rendition of the license as so many developers tend to do (Gameloft, I’m looking at you), but made a bold move to put Batman in a completely new style of game.
Admittedly, that bold move hasn’t paid off, but points have to be awarded for effort.
That Batman doesn’t use guns is a major part of his identity and appeal, and therefore his fist-fighting abilities always feature heavily in games.
Removing that aspect entirely is the angle Glu has opted for in Guardian of Gotham, and the result is just as odd as it sounds.

What we have instead is something of a stationary FPS, in which you’re primary weapon is a batarang - essentially casting the gun-less hero into a gun-toting game.
Popular enemies from the comic series, such as The Joker, Riddler, and Two face, all crop up along with their legions of goons to act as fast-moving batarang fodder. Aiming is taken care of almost entirely via an automatic system.
Your only input is in clicking left and right to select the next target along, so missing is never really a concern. All you need to do is judge which is likely to be the next enemy to get close enough to do you damage - usually a knife that needs thwacking out of mid-air.
The grappling hook also comes into play when you’re looking for something slightly different to do, and Batman can swing into the action to grab a bad guy and insist he tell all his friends about him (not really).
It’s a mild distraction and a mostly ineffectual gameplay mechanic, as you can’t be harmed when going in close to the action.
Instead, all that really happens is that goons launch a volley of knives at the place where you used to be stood, ready for them to land as soon as you return from swinging around the scenery.
Ultimately Batman: Guardian of Gotham was a worthy experiment that didn’t pay off.
It’s good to see Glu experimenting with its licences, so hopefully lessons have been learned here and next time we can expect something original and awesome from the Dark Knight.
